Over de kunstenaar:
By Kimenai is een Nederlandse designer en kunstenaar. Ze is geen klassiek geschoolde artiest. Met twee degrees in design ontwerpt ze dagelijks nieuwe merken en ijzersterke gebruikersinterfaces. Toch besloot Kimenai dat ze iets wilde doen dat dichter bij haar hart lag. Iets om bij te dragen om de wereld wat kleurrijker te maken. By Kimenai is een designer on the run.

Over het kunstwerk:
“I made this when I was volunteering for VWN, a dutch organization for refugees. Scrolling trough Facebook I noticed I was getting really mad (no,no… mad it’s not really the good word. Deeply ashamed of my dutch fellow man) at all the hateful posts about the refugees not being welcome here. And I realized that I had to do something. So I started reacting to the posts but of course it wasn’t getting me anywhere, so I unfriended all the haters. It felt nice for like 5 seconds but that’s just avoiding the problem. Then I decided to actively help these people and make them feel welcome. So I joined VWN and got to know this woman who fled the war Syria with her husband and four small children. I’ve been her coach for two years now, helping her with the dutch language and everyday problems they run into. They have welcomed me in their lives with open arms. Telling me all their stories, laughing at the dutch weird language and late night dinners during Ramadan. This piece is about me trying to give something to her but instead i got so much more from her. She gives so much warmth. I want people to see that.”
